I still recall when “Text” meant AOL’s Instant Messenger (AIM) and most large companies actually had a policy banning its use in offices. Apparently the OFICs (i.e. “Old Farts in Charge”) saw their kids playing around with AIM instead of doing their homework, and the boss didn’t want any of those shenanigans on company time.

This year's third quarter sees the Android operating system steadily making strides as it accounts for 81 percent of total smartphone shipments or 211.6 million smartphone units, while Apple's iPhone drops from a year-ago 14.4 percent to this quarter's 12.9 percent, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker.

Gartner's Q1 Smartphone Report Finds Android in Top Spot

The Gartner Q1 report for mobile phone/smartphone shipments shows that Google's Android operating system has demonstrated a strong growth rate, and it looks like this is set to continue for the rest of the year. Google's mobile operating system has extended its lead in the smartphone OS market, as the global market share for Android increased from 56.9 percent to 74.4 percent year over year.
