Big Data Exec Responsible for VMware's End-User Computing Unit

VMware is seeking to make gains with end-user computing (software which connects enterprise apps and data with employees' notebooks and mobile devices), as the company expands beyond server virtualization.

Sanjay Poonen is a veteran of VMware's big data analytics and mobility efforts, and is now responsible for the drive towards the company's end-user computing unit; his title is executive vice president and general manager of end-user computing at VMware.

This move is key for the company, as it shows that despite the departure of a number of executives and sale of pieces like Zimbra and SlideRocket in recent years, VMware is still keen to focus on end-user computing.

There has not been much information regarding the unit (which includes desktop virtualization, cloud storage and application management) and its contribution to the overall revenue at VMware, and this is partly because the company does not break out revenue for end-user computing.

Despite this, end-user computing has been identified as one of the three growth areas by the company, in addition to software-defined data center and hybrid cloud, which are also significant aspects of VMware's business.

The COO at VMware, Carl Eschenbach, stated that there was a growth in end-user computing license bookings "in the mid-teens year-over-year" following the achievement of similar results during VMware's Q1.

Poonen noted that currently, there is no dominant enterprise player in end-user computing. He said: "It's not that anyone has failed. End-user computing is a big opportunity, and there are so many ways to touch a business user. We should really be in position to take a lot of market share."

VMware's end-user computing employee ranks will likely expand; Poonen commented: "We want to hire young talent right out of college, including computer scientists and engineers." (CY) Link
