Damaka Brings Unified Communication and Collaboration Platform to BlackBerry

28 Jul 2010

Damaka announced the introduction of its Unified Communication and Collaboration product suite for BlackBerry devices. The upcoming release will provide users with presence, instant messaging, application and desktop sharing, and the ability to join in audio conferences.

The solution for BlackBerry includes Damaka's Sweeping technology, made for transferring in-process collaboration sessions to and from multiple devices, no matter what the OS or network may be.

However, not everyone is convinced about the value this provides. "Having a BlackBerry client does not mean that anyone is going to use it," says Michael Finneran, UCStrategies UC Expert. "The key to success an a mobile application is leveraging the device's native capabilities and native interface; users have made it clear that they like their current mobile experience and are not the least bit interested in relearning how to use their mobile phones. Thus far the only one who has been able to deliver that type of user experience in the BlackBerry environment is RIM themselves." Finneran notes, "In my view, if this is yet another 'add-on' mobile UC application for the BlackBerry, it will join the legion of unsalable mobile 'demo-ware.'"

Damaka's mobile unified communications and collaboration solutions are available in client-server or Peer-to-Peer architectures, based on "direct peering" Peer-to-Peer technology for smartphones and various operating systems. The solutions are available now for Android, iPhone and iPad, Symbian, and Windows Mobile platforms.
