28 Feb 2013

Polycom makes globally available the updated version of its video collaboration app. Dubbed Polycom RealPresence Mobile 2.2, the updated software now enables users to perform video collaboration through smartphones and tablets. The app was demonstrated during the recently concluded Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Polycom RealPresence Mobile 2.2 sports the company's SmartPairing technology and enables both content sharing and scalable video coding (SVC) support for Android and iOS devices, particularly new support for the iPad mini and iPhone 5. Polycom touts that the app is designed to offer video collaboration among users who work remotely or travel a lot. It is also said to help enterprises embrace the growing BYOD trend. And when the app is powered by Polycom RealPresence Platform, it enables users of mobile devices to perform searches on corporate directories, share content, and go over secure firewalls.

SmartPairing technology lets users wirelessly manage Polycom room systems. Tablets can be paired with Polycom's video conferencing systems, allowing users to change the settings, such as volume and start/stop functionalities, of the ongoing video meeting. With a swipe of the finger, SmartPairing technology also lets users enter a conference room while they are simultaneously engaged in a live mobile video call which can be transferred from tablet to the big video meeting screen.

Moreover, upgrading to the new software comes with 3X HD video capacity, tablet content sharing functionality when doing a video conference, and a reduced total cost of ownership (TCO). Polycom RealPresence Mobile 2.2 can also be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Polycom extends support to over a dozen mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets from Apple, HTC, Motorola, and Samsung.

"When we unveiled RealPresence Mobile in October 2011, we knew we were at the beginning of a wave of use cases for mobile video. Since then, we've seen fast adoption of RealPresence Mobile among businesses, as well as vertical industries such as healthcare, education and financial services," said A.E. Natarajan, senior vice president of Worldwide Engineering at Polycom. "As a result of the innovation of Polycom's engineering team, we're proud to offer the most interoperable, reliable and secure solution for video collaboration that supports BYOD in a mobile world and enables dispersed workers to get business done faster."
