Telecom Infrastructure Management Specialist Acquired By Cisco

A maker of network planning and design and traffic tools for telecom service providers, Cariden Technologies, was last week said to have been bought privately by Cisco.

Cariden is set to become a part of Cisco's Service Provider Networking Group under vice president and general manager of Software and Applications Group, Shailesh Shukla; $141 million will also be paid in cash and retention-based incentives by Cisco.

Both planning of capacity and the managing of tools for IP/MPLS networks are specialities of the company, and Cariden's technology will be strengthened through Cisco's plan to include it in the nLight platform for IP and optical merging, as well as for WAN orchestration. Cisco believes that network infrastructure will become more manageable and more efficient with the aid of their service providers.

The senior vice president and general manager of Cisco Service Provider Networking Group, Surya Panditi, said in a statement: "Given the widespread convergence of IP and optical networks, Cariden's technology will help carriers more efficiently manage bandwidth, network traffic and intelligence. This acquisition signals the next phase in Cisco's packet and optical convergence strategy and further strengthens our ability to lead this market transition in networking."

Cariden, which is based in Sunnyvale, California, has large and important partnerships not only with Cisco, but also some of its rivals in the networking space. Two of these include Alcatel-Lucent and Juniper. Cariden has had membership in Cisco's Developer Network Partner Program for several years, and has been a key reseller and system integrator program.

Cisco returned this year following little M&A activity throughout its global restructuring. The company has also been making its regular and frequent acquisitions, and has acquired, for the sum of $1.2 billion, cloud-managed networking specialist Meraki. Other acquisitions over the last six months include NDS Group, vCider, ThinkSmart, Virtuata and Cloupia. (CY) Link
