Easily Connect Analog Infrastructure to the Cloud

Migration of the enterprise analog communications infrastructure to session border controllers is an important and compelling decision. This migration is necessary for migration of communications services to the cloud and can produce immediate savings and improved services in most cases. This article describes the reasons and the methods for an analog infrastructure upgrade.

Overview of the Problem

Analog Devices on copper wiring pairs are an important part of your enterprise communication infrastructure. Examples of important Analog Devices include analog desk phones, conference room speakerphones, spark-free phones in certain construction or manufacturing areas, wall phones, lobby phones, fax machines, modems, parking lot emergency phones, and device monitors such as door alarms, refrigerator monitors, and others.

In most cases, these analog devices are connected as telephone numbers on the enterprise PBX gateways and require a PBX license for each line. The economics of these licenses will be reviewed in a later section of this article.

Some of these analog devices are moving toward Internet Protocol (IP) products, as part of the trend towards the Internet of Things (IoT), but an IoT conversion can be costly and time-consuming.

Also, it can be difficult and costly to convert these analog devices and copper pairs to voice over IP (VoIP) and session initiation protocol (SIP). In some older buildings retrofitting to CAT 5 cabling is really cost prohibitive whether due to the age of the building or to the asbestos mitigation that is mandated if the walls are opened. In some cases wireless solutions are proposed, but most enterprises find that wireless replacement of the copper pairs do not provide sufficient connectivity or reliability.

Four Reasons to Update Analog Connectivity

It is important at this time to review and possibly update your analog communication infrastructure for four reasons:

  1. Preparation for moving to the cloud. Communications options in the cloud are becoming more and more feature rich and compelling. These include Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS), conferencing services, and communications services integrated into workflow-centric products such as Microsoft Teams. In order to move to these cloud services it is necessary to have migrated the analog infrastructure to a configuration that can connect to or integrate with the cloud-based communications services. Without such preparation, a migration to the cloud will be more difficult, more costly, and more time-consuming.
     
  2. Improve analog infrastructure management. Most PBX-based analog connectivity has limited visibility into the PBX administration, monitoring, and reporting subsystems. It is now possible to move that infrastructure into a modern administrative environment that will improve analog lines services while reducing the associated costs and overhead.
     
  3. Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) carrier services flexibility. The marketplace for carrier services is providing an increasing number of very competitive choices. An update to the analog communication infrastructure can improve the ability to move voice communications traffic to the best available carrier facilities either in parallel to or as a replacement for the existing carrier service contracts.
     
  4. Financial benefits. In most cases, the analog communications infrastructure can be migrated to a modern format while reducing the overall cost for PBX licensing and administrative support. The most significant factor is the ability to eliminate costly PBX licensing for the analog lines. In many cases, the analog lines are included in the PBX maintenance contract under Unified Communications (UC) user licenses. While some PBX manufacturers also offer a lower cost single-line license that excludes the UC features, most vendors require customers to purchase those lower-cost licenses rather than allowing a trade-in or downgrade from the UC maintenance license.

    By moving the analog communications infrastructure to a more modern routing device, the PBX station licensing and maintenance licensing can be eliminated entirely. If the migration to a modern routing device is financed through a multi-year lease, the budgetary benefits can be realized immediately and will continue into the future.

The Best Practices Solution

The best practices solution for modern management of analog communications infrastructure is the use of session border controllers (SBCs) with analog adapters to connect and to manage the analog connectivity. A session border controller is an Internet Protocol routing system that connects systems, devices, and/or telephony trunks under advanced programmatic controls. Routing algorithms can range from simple to very advanced. The routing can be based on automatic updates from the enterprise directory for information about users, devices, and telephone numbers.

SBCs have an Internet Protocol architecture that can be augmented with analog adapter modules that support signaling to and from the analog devices, as well as conversion of the analog signaling to and from session initiation protocol (SIP). The analog adapter module also provides the required dialtone and dialing capabilities for the analog device. Modern SBC’s also include sophisticated yet easy-to-use management consoles that make them simple to include in the overall enterprise network and IT architecture.

Since SBCs have been the gateways to the PSTN for many years, they have advanced and sophisticated security provisions included in their core software and hardware.

The enterprise can port existing telephone numbers to the Microsoft network to avoid any disruption to users or callers.
     
  2. Microsoft Teams Direct Routing: an enterprise can continue to route their calls to and from the PSTN using their existing telephony carriers and connect the PSTN facilities to the Microsoft Teams Phone System using a certified SBC. Most enterprises are choosing option 2, Direct Routing, because of the contracts and cost arrangements with existing PSTN carriers and because it is often much simpler and more convenient to manage the telephone numbers and dial plan within the enterprise infrastructure using the SBC.

A simplified topology diagram representing the factors described in this article is shown below. The diagram shows the logic of the configuration, but not the expected provisions for redundancy and administration.
