Machine Learning And Artificial Intelligence: Are My Freelance Writing Days Numbered?

26 Apr 2017

Take a look around, wherever we may be, artificial intelligence is already upon us. It is no longer something that is coming in the distant future. Rather, it is something that we have been living with and will continue to live with for years to come.

Artificial intelligence has been serving millions on a daily basis behind the scenes from business, communication, medicine, automobile navigation, military operations, space exploration, space exploration, and so on. It has made a huge difference in our lives. Every day, we reap the fruits of the work accomplished in these fields.

Machine learning, a type of artificial intelligence, enables computers to get into a mode of self-learning. When they are exposed to new data, they have the ability to learn, grown, change, and develop without being explicitly programmed. They are somehow able to mimic the cognitive functions of human minds such as learning and problem solving.

With these in mind, I started to ponder. Are my freelance writing days numbered? Will artificial intelligence eventually have the capacity to write articles and literary works of the future? When you come to think of it, there is a very good chance that the answers to these questions are a big YES!

If you are also a freelance writer and this is what you do for a living, I bet that you are getting a little worried. It is possible that machine learning algorithms can replace people. The system makes analysis of the people's actions, make rules based on these information, and apply these rules.

Right now, ChatBots are getting even better and are more widely used. Google X-Labs, together with Facebook's AI program, are all working on novel writing too. They take every potential plot, every names of characters, and all the psychological profiles of characters ever created and then combine them by using derivative software. As human readers rate these favorably, the machine learning system will adapt to tastes by percentage of likes and eventually develop niche categories.

Furthermore, computer artificial intelligence systems like IBM's Watson aims to go one step further. It will allow for the creation of creative products. For example, stories, poems, original thoughts, a combination of examples, allegories, comparison of two thing, jokes with trivia and recent events, puns, and plays on words.

In this context, think of creating a story consisting of 10 pages you or I could probably write in a day. On the other hand, an artificial intelligence can do 10 per minute. Kind of overwhelming, isn't it?

A wake up call for everyone in the writing field to be the best that they can possibly be. The better you are and the more advanced your skills are, the better your chances will be of still being in the same profession 10 years from now. You need to hone your skills now and learn all you can to master your trade. Otherwise, as The Donald might say, "You're Fired!"
